Audience: principals, superintendent, school board I don't have a preference so if one of you have a strong feeling about particular audience, then I'm fine going with that. Same here - however, I do think the audience with the least amount of prior knowledge in this area would be school board members. I think I like the idea of presenting to the school board who are more like community members. If we want teacher-librarian collaboration, I think the school administrator or principal is the immediate direct to get the support.
So we have
1 - I don't care 2- school board members 1 - principal I don't mind changing my vote to principal from school board members Let's go for majority. School board members.
Slogan/Logo
A.Can't get this slogan to copy onto here from Word. The picture would be a simple house shape. Rectangle as the [[#|foundation]] with the work Librarians. Square as the house with the word Classroom Teachers. Triangle roof with the word Administrators
Building Strong Foundations in the Library * I still like this one....any thought?....if we like the idea of using phrases like "student achievement", "teacher collaboration", "leadership", etc, maybe these could be incorporated into the house or building image...??? I think we should keeping brainstorming. I'm not 100% for this one.
B.The Librarian - Your School's Secret Weapon (I know the word weapon might be a problem) C.The Librarian - Your School's Secret Ingredient For Success D. Cooking Up Student Achievement (graphic of measuring spoons or kitchen ingredients labeled = school librarian, classroom teachers, administrators, quality instruction E.Cooking Up Collaboration
If we chose one of B, C, D and E, we could take picture of ourselves with the kitchen ingredients in our slogan?
F."Librarians Hold the Keys" and a set of keys with "student achievement", "teacher collaboration", "leadership",etc. I'm changing my vote to this one now that I see your idea for a logo. *This needs to be OUT...too similar to another.
Like that too...Strong foundation is the key. I'm flexible.
G. Some more ideas: L. I. F. E. Librarians Inspire collaboration Find knowledge Engage students Logo could be a tree of life. It illustrates the importance of librarians in the life of a student. Like that too!!
Just a thought here about the slogan...if our target audience is going to be school board members, should the logo be more "all encompassing" and include students, teachers, admin. etc. and not only directed toward student success? Does this make sense? I know student success is the ultimate goal but maybe the slogan should show a connection to all.
Yes, the audience is board members, we have to show our common goal for who? Our students, that we want to see them success and who can open the doors for them? Everyone involved like teachers, parents, school board members and the school administrators that the librarian is the key to collaborate. As we know with budget crisis we are having these days, the librarians are first to go. I hope my view makes sense or am I misinterpreting this? So I'd vote for F. *Pattie mentioned there is a similar slogan on a sample presentation (using keys) so I don't know if we want to/or should have something so similar. What do you think? I would hate to lose points because of something like that. GaylaThanks Gayla, YES, we need to be different, I'll withdraw my vote.
I just sent you all email, "Knowledge is the Power" - Francisco Bacon Are you suggesting this for a slogan? I'm not sure if we can use someone else's slogan but if you want to play with it and make it something original we could consider it. True, it's better for us if it's original, show our creativity!! heee I really liked your suggestion, too.
Wow, Marsha I LOVE this one!!!! Awesome job! I really like this one too Marsha. Great work :) I like this too Marsha.
Research: So far I've posted notes on 4 articles. Ada sent me one that I need to read and add. Post any additional resources here. I have notes from two more articles to post as well. Both articles support the important role of librarians as leaders. 4/1 Gayla why don't you go ahead and add your notes to the research wiki page and then we can see if there is anything else we need and be done with that part by Friday so we can all start helping Ada with the elevator speech. 4/1 I posted my notes from the 4 articles I worked with on the research page as well. 4/2 Everyone look at the research and make comments here if you see anything that should be changed, reformatted or added.
Artifacts/Co-teaching in Action: So far I've posted two artifacts. One is a prezi showing Lance research and one is my ISearch video showing library/teacher collaboration. I also have a slide rocket presentation demonstrating co-teaching scenarios. I can post it after we decide on a logo because I want to use the logo in the video. List your ideas for artifacts here.
3/29 Here's a slide rocket I created about coteaching. Tell me what you think. I can make changes. I like your artifact! I like this as well...lots of area covered in a "viewer friendly" format.
I added a prezi about collaborating with the librarian using IIM research model- see artifacts page. Maybe it is too similar to other prezi. Yay, The more the merrier! Beautiful job, Pattie! Thanks, I think the logo looks really good with it and goes along with teachers not teaching behind closed doors.
4/7 I added an infrograph from Library Research Services. Once we add a couple of lesson plans I think we are in good shape for artifacts. I still want to make some sort of table or other visual to show the benefits of coteaching/collaboration. If anyone wants to help me make that I'll create a Google doc and invite you.
4/24 Hi everyone. As we've worked on this project, I have added several artifacts to the artifact page. However, I'm not comfortable being the only person represented in our final project. I think we need to consider ALL of our work. We need lesson plans, portraits, inquiry projects, and even the table/chart we created long ago from the videos. Let's all list something we would like to contribute and WHY. Tell what special aspect of librarianship or collaborating that the project shows. I will start a discussion on the artifact page for everyone's input. 4/25 I added a lesson plan for my artifact on that page as well. I also responded in the discussion tab. 4/25 I am adding a lesson plan
Marketing tool:
Door hanger? Mug with slogan or message (When they drink their coffee every morning they'll see it!) Mouse pad- it would be seen everyday I like that too!
Key chain (for office/desk/file cabinet keys?) I like this one too! YES YES YES!! I like key chain with a key that has logo on it.
Key chains got my vote!! Because students and parents can use them as well!! Key chain goes along with our logo/slogan really well. Here's what the rubric says: "The marketing tool is targeted for specific administrator audience. It capitalizes on the slogan and provides exemplary examples of ways the school librarian serves as an instructional partner AND projessional developer." So it can't just be a key chain, we've got to somehow show examples of what the librarian can do. Maybe we also need a brochure or fact sheet or someother way to show examples. I'm going to think about this and try to come up with something in the next couple of days.
4/9 Ok so I've been thinking about this and I made a one page flyer of library events including professional development. It's kind of rough and I'm not trying to push something here that everyone doesn't want, just take a look at tell me what you think. We could hand out this flyer in addition to the key chain. 4/10 How about bookmark? http://www.coloribus.com/adsarchive/design/felix-jud-co-the-bookmark-promotion-13967705/
4/9 I like the flyer! Very visually appealing with great information supporting the roles...I do like the key chain idea so maybe something like the combination of the two would work. 4/10 - beautiful flyer, Gayla!!! Maybe we also use the bookmark with the event dates on the back? Or all the media information? I didn't do the flyer :) But I like it! 4/11 If you all want to keep the flyer I can do some editing (punctuation, spelling etc.) What do you think about the events? I tried to incorporate different kind of professional development. If you have any other ideas I'm happy to change it up. I like the flyer. Let's go with it. Maybe just tweek it if we think of something else to add. I like the flyer as well. The fact that it describes professional attributes of librarians as well as serves as a calender and promotion of professional development opportunities is great! Let's be sure to check the name of the librarian to make sure it matches the one we decide on going with. 4/22 I will edit the flyer and post a new one with updated info and corrections made. Does anyone want anything else changed on the flyer?
Web tool- Xtranormal or Voki - either is fine, whichever is easier. Both of them are auditory based and I wouldn't use them for my deaf students.
Hone in on big ideas: impact of student achievement, instructional partner leadership roles - impact on student achievement I need a name for the librarian: any ideas? Mrs. Paige Turner - This is cute! I was trying to come up with something "catchy" and I got the Paige but didn't think of that :) I like this one, too!!! How about using "Ms." instead?I was just looking at the sample projects and someone already used this name :( Mrs. Ima Reader - This would be my second vote but change to Ms. This would be my second choice, too! Marion the Librarian, Charlotte Webb (as in Charlotte's Web)
Ada, if you want to start an outline here for the speech we will all jump in and help. Since we are talking to board members whose only experience with a librarian may be from their own schooling, perhaps we should start out by addressing the preconcieved ideas of what a librarian does. Then we could move on to how a librarian can positively impact the school. Maybe we could make the first part interactive somehow. Probably we could show our students' project that was developed by the librarian & teachers collaboration to the board members. Maybe w could do a "mini" documentary of the collaboration and to present them a mini collaboration documentary film at the board meeting?
Outline for Elevator Speech:
First Draft: Introduction: Hello, members of the Heritage School Board. My name is Kathy Bates and I am a literacy coach? at Oak Meadows Elementary.(Should we have the librarian make presentation or a teacher/administrator/community member?I think the librarian. Yes the librarian.OKAY, I will do librarian. I am here today to show you how librarians can open doors for everyone! I'm here today to advocate for the importance of keeping school librarians in our school libraries.(Let's don't assume they're getting rid of the librarians, let's keep it positive.)How librarians are the key to students' impact of their achievement by collaborating with teachers and parents....something like that. Some of you may not be fully aware of the scope of a school librarians' duties or the powerful impact they have on student achievementhow impactful they are to the success of our reading program and student achievement. School librarians do not simply shelve and check out books. School librarian do more than simply shelve and check out books...try to remove "not"? I just read Law of Attraction! hee) They are the heart of the literacy program as leaders, collaborators, and co-teachers. School librarians are in the unique position of impacting every student and every teacher the learning of every student in the entire school. Let's take a moment to view a presentation of the work of our school librarian, Charlotte Webb, who has opened the doors of students' success in reading, opened the doors of collaboration with teachers, and opened the doors of the love of reading for all in the school community. Short Slide presentation???__: Title- "Librarians Open the Doors for Everyone," picture of librarian as collaborator, coteacher, trainer of staff, key decision maker (meets with administrators, teachers), public relations (meets with community members), love of reading advocate (inspires life-long readers). Should we include research quotes here???Look at some of the presentations I've posted, I think one of them might work here. There is a prezi that shows all of Lance's research or a slide rocket that shows coteaching scenarios. I like the slide rocket but it does not show all of the ways that the librarian can impact the entire school community. Maybe an animoto with pictures of a real librarian interacting with parents, principal, the students, and collaborating with teachers would be better? The first slide can be the librarian unlocking the door to the library. Prezi of Lance's research seems to long. It may lose our audience. Got it! I like the idea of starting with the librarian opening a door. How would you incorporate the animoto in the voki? Would you stop the voki and show the video? I remember an example Dr. M. had where there was a pause in Voki presentation to present something...I'll have to look at it again. I like the idea of real pictures and scenarios and an animoto is always eye catching. Do you think there is time to make a video? Yes, if we can gather pictures. I can ask my librarian to pose for pictures. Opening a door is also like passing out the key. I like the ides of "unlocking the door" first slide! I decided not to pause during presentation, but I can end with an animoto after Voki. As you can see, Charlotte Webb, not only inspires all students to love reading, she also is a campus leader who helps all teachers to successfully implement our reading initiatives by coplanning and coteaching along side them as an instructional partner and as a trainer of staff development on the research process and technology maybe break up this sentence because it is really long.. She is instrumental in preparing our students to become 21st century learners in our technologically advanced society by teaching media literacy and Web too. Should we throw in one standard and example since we should assume that the board members aren't familiar with any of 21st century standard and how important that we use them to tie it to our students' achievement? As you all prepare to make important budget decisions for the next school year, we ask you to consider the important research that has clearly shown the positive impact strong library programs and librarians have on student achievement in reading and media literacy. Should we mention research here or put it in slide presentation? I would offer a little bit of research here in the speech. Something like this.. Not only are the librarians in Heritage School District opening doors for students and teachers, we can offer research that shows how important they really are to student achievement. In 1993, 2007 and 2010, Keith Curry Lance... Keith Curry Lance's Colorado impact studies in 1993 showed that the best school predictor of academic achievement is the size of the library program, that is, the amount of full time qualified staff as well as the size of the collection. He also found that the instructional role of the librarian is important as well as the degree of collaboration that occurs between the librarian and classroom teachers. Furthermore, Lance's studies in 2007 and 2010 Show some kind of statistics with visual tool such as graph? to show the growth, something convincing.
It is simple and sweet. Looking good, Ada!! Thanks, it's a work in progress. I seem to add/change something every time I read it.I think you have done a great job as well! I'm also like that, always make some changes every time I read, then it'll be forever!! here
2nd draft: I'm going to write some suggestions to shorten this is green.
Hello members of the Heritage School Board. My name is Charlotte Webb and I am here to show you how librarians can help students meet college and career readiness standards and we ready for the 21st century workforce. School librarians have the keys to open the doors of ....(finish paragraph) Thanks, I'll reduce size of my original that I am cutting out because I don't know how to line through it.
Hello members of the Heritage School Board. My name is Charlotte Webb and I am here to show you how school librarians have the keys to impact student achievement. Do you wonder how Heritage ISD is preparing its students to meet college and career readiness standards and the state-mandated testing? School librarians are your answer! They play a key role as instructional partners educating students in media literacy and technology to prepare them for the 21st century workforce. can help students meet college and career readiness standards and be ready for the 21st century workforce. Are you concerned about how Heritage ISD will meet the college and career readiness standards and provide 21st Century workforce skills to students? Are you concerned about preparing every student to succeed on the state-mandated test? Well, as a school librarian, I would like to share with you how School librarians. School librarians do more than simply shelve and check out books. We are in the unique position to impact every student and teacher at our school. They work collaboratively with teachers to co-plan, co-teach, and co-assess exciting and creative lessons that use inquiry learning, target STAAR readiness skills, and use Web tools that engage students. These collaborations have the added benefit of job-embedded professional development! Studies conducted by Keith Curry Lance have shown that as the librarian collaborations with teachers increased and as librarians played a more instructional role, the higher student scores rose on reading tests.
Your school librarians are highly qualified and have Using the keys of leadership, instructional expertise, and collaboration librarians that can open the doors of 21st Century learning to all students and teachers and increase student achievement.(I broke this into two sentences).Their expertise in media literacy and technology can help prepare students to be successful in an increasingly complex and technological society by teaching them how to search and use information and use Web tools.School librarians have the key of leadership. They lead as trainers of technology and media literacy for teachers. They are leaders on campus reading initiatives to increase student success in reading. They promote a passion for reading throughout the school community through exciting literacy projects that ignite student motivation to increase their reading and promotes life-long learning.
Lastly, I ask you to consider.... Research studies that have shown that the best predictor of student achievement is related to the size of the library program, its collection, and the presence of highly qualified staff. Teachers gain skills from job-embedded professional development through these collaborations. The librarians' expertise in gathering resources, updating collections, and promoting literacy projects will spark interest in reading throughout the whole school community.
We invite you to visit with the school librarians and ask them to show you how they can open the doors of endless possibilities for everyone at Heritage ISD!
4/22 I LOVE how you broke down the different keys, BRILLIANT! I changed a couple of words and broke up the paragraphs so I could see it better. I think you left off something from paragraph 3. I think this is awesome and ready to put into a voki. Thanks! I am almost done. Maybe we can use these "keys" in our key chain idea?
4/5 - Here is the final slogan/logo for this group project!
4/25 - saw them online....click on the image to the website.
Hey everyone - I made those keys. If we still want it...any input, colors? I wasn't sure if I should include the image/logo because the key shape is already a key itself. Looks great! I would say not to use the logo because of the size and shape but just the wording. I like it! Photo Editor - PicMonkey Photo Editor Online - Pixlr
4/26 Maybe we could have a front and back of the key chain. Logo on one side and slogan on the other. Maybe the door pic would fit on the fat part of the key. I'm afraid if we don't put the logo we might get counted off. I love how the chain is in the shape of a key! Great job Marsha! I like all three colors. Maybe see what the door looks like on there and then pick a color from there. 4/26 - Sure I'll add the logo on it. One with Slogan, double with slogan on the other side OR one without slogan with slogan on other side. 4/26 Great job! I like the one with just the logo on one side and slogan on other side. I think the bright colors stand out more. Not sure I like white.
4/26 I agree, just the door and put the words on the other side. I like the yellow or purple ones. AWESOME JOB

Web tool- Xtranormal or Voki - either is fine, whichever is easier. Both of them are auditory based and I wouldn't use them for my deaf students.
Hone in on big ideas: impact of student achievement, instructional partner leadership roles - impact on student achievementI need a name for the librarian: any ideas?
Mrs. Paige Turner - This is cute! I was trying to come up with something "catchy" and I got the Paige but didn't think of that :) I like this one, too!!! How about using "Ms." instead? I was just looking at the sample projects and someone already used this name :(
Mrs.
First Draft:Introduction:
Hello, members of the Heritage School Board. My name is Kathy Bates and I am a literacy coach? at Oak Meadows Elementary.(Should we have the librarian make presentation or a teacher/administrator/community member? I think the librarian. Yes the librarian. OKAY, I will do librarian. I am here today to show you how librarians can open doors for everyone! I'm here today to advocate for the importance of keeping school librarians in our school libraries. (Let's don't assume they're getting rid of the librarians, let's keep it positive.) How librarians are the key to students' impact of their achievement by collaborating with teachers and parents....something like that.
Some of you may not be fully aware of the scope of a school librarians' duties or the powerful impact they have on student achievement how impactful they are to the success of our reading program and student achievement.
Should we include research quotes here??? Look at some of the presentations I've posted, I think one of them might work here.
Your school librarians are highly qualified and have
Using the keys of leadership, instructional expertise, and collaboration librarians that can open the doors of 21st Century learning to all students and teachers and increase student achievement. (I broke this into two sentences). Their expertise in media literacy and technology can help prepare students to be successful in an increasingly complex and technological society by teaching them how to search and use information and use Web tools.School librarians have the key of leadership.

I LOVE how you broke down the different keys, BRILLIANT! I changed a couple of words and broke up the paragraphs so I could see it better. I think you left off something from paragraph 3. I think this is awesome and ready to put into a voki. Thanks! I am almost done. Maybe we can use these "keys" in our key chain idea?
Final Copy of Transcript
4/5 - Here is the final slogan/logo for this group project!
4/25 - saw them online....click on the image to the website.
Hey everyone - I made those keys. If we still want it...any input, colors? I wasn't sure if I should include the image/logo because the key shape is already a key itself. Looks great! I would say not to use the logo because of the size and shape but just the wording. I like it!

AWESOME JOB
